MANASQUAN, N.J. (Dec. 4, 2012) All the magic of "The Nutcracker" comes to life on the Algonquin Arts Theatre stage on Dec. 15 and 16 with Tchaikovsky's magnificent score, stunning new sets, thrilling choreography and a massive cast are featured in three performances.
American Repertory Ballet's professional company is joined by students from Princeton Ballet School to tell the story of a young girl and how a mysterious gift brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes.
The Star-Ledger praised this production as "a timeless adventure," writing "Visitors pass through The Nutcracker's' magic portal and find themselves in a place no one ever saw, but everyone can call home."
Whether it is your first time, an annual tradition, ARB's Nutcracker is a perfect holiday treat for the entire family. There will be two performances on Saturday, Dec. 15 (1 & 4:30 p.m.) and one performance on Sunday, Dec. 16 (3 p.m.).
Tickets are available online at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or by visiting the Box Office at 173 Main Street. Tickets start at $38 for adults, $36 for seniors and $28 for students. The tradition of American Repertory Ballet's "The Nutcracker" began in 1956 with Audre Estey producing the organization's first full-length performance for the Princeton Ballet School's spring show. In 1962, the Princeton Regional Ballet Company premiered the full work at McCarter Theatre, and it has been performed every year since 1964.
Choreography, scenes and costumes have continually evolved through the decades. Two seasons ago, ARB Artistic Director Douglas Martin choreographed an all new Snow scene and Act II and restaged the classic, Victorian era choreography by Audre Estey for the Party and Battle scenes. New scenery has been added each of the last two years.
Algonquin Arts Theatre was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organization to provide cultural enrichment and educational enhancement of the highest quality for Central New Jersey residents. Founded in 1963, American Repertory Ballet's mission is to bring the joy, beauty, artistry and discipline of classical and contemporary dance to New Jersey and nationwide audiences and to dance students through artistic and educational programs.
