"Kids Say the Darndest Things! Starring Patrick Cassidy"
"Kids Say the Darndest Things! Starring Patrick Cassidy" is a new musical version of the hilarious best-selling book with the same name based on Art Linkletter's television show. This same concept later inspired the comedy series hosted by Bill Cosby.
The role of the host is played by Broadway veteran Patrick Cassidy, son of Shirley Jones best known for her role as Shirley Partridge. An Emmy-nominated actor for his role on "Dress Gray" in the 1980s on screen, Cassidy's numerous Broadway appearances include leading roles in "Annie Get Your Gun," "Aida," "42nd Street" and "The Pirates of Penzance." He also originated the role of the balladeer in Stephen Sondheim's off-Broadway production of "Assassins."
Cassidy will appear opposite of dozens of young stars from the Algonquin Youth Ensemble (AYE) who will surely have some zany and oddly wise things to say and sing.
Algonquin Arts Theatre is fortunate to have Robert Johanson ("Joseph... Dreamcoat" & "The 1940s Radio Hour") return to direct this production. Johanson wrote the book and lyrics to this show, giving the students enrolled in AYE a chance to work with an experience director who also helped create this new musical.
"Kids Say the Darndest Things!" opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 and continues with 8 p.m. performances on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, June 30, and the show will close with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, July 1.
The 39 Steps
In July, Shore Repertory Theatre Company brings "The 39 Steps" to stage. A mix of a Hitchcock masterpiece, a juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Python, "The 39 Steps" is a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre.
The show is packed with nonstop laughs, more than 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance.
In "The 39 Steps," a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale.
A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, "The 39 Steps" was Broadway's longest running comedy. It will run at Algonquin Arts Theatre for two weekends from July 13-15 and 20-22 with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.
Oliver!
As 2012 marks Charles Dickens' 200th birthday, Algonquin Arts Theatre celebrates with "Oliver!," the classic musical based on Dicken's "Oliver Twist."
This engaging three-time Tony Award winner appeals to the emotions with its drama and delights with outstanding music including "Food, Glorious Food," "I'd Do Anything," "Where is Love?," and "Consider Yourself."
Dickens' characters Oliver, The Artful Dodger, Nancy, Bill Sikes and Fagin will become larger than life in the hands of the Algonquin Players and Algonquin Youth Ensemble under the direction of Robert Johanson.
First presented in London, where it played for 2,618 performances at the New Theatre, "Oliver!" played for 774 performances on Broadway. It will play for eight performances this summer from August 3-5 and 10-12. There will be Friday and Saturday night performances with an 8 p.m. curtain, two Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. and two Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.
