MANASQUAN, N.J. (Sept. 13, 2013) There's no holding back as Algonquin Arts Theatre goes "The Full Monty" to open its 2013-14 Broadway Series on Friday, Sept. 27.

Broadway Ray sponsors and the Algonquin produces this Broadway musical which runs for two weeks on Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.; closing on October 6.

The main characters in "The Full Monty" are unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, N.Y. Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their "Girls' Night Out," they come up with a bold way to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun.

As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties (over everything from being overweight to child custody, bigotry to being gay), they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them.

There is great heart to "The Full Monty," and the ultimate themes expressed in the show, about taking charge of one's life and following one's dreams are great lessons for all of us - and can be achieved without ever losing your jockey shorts!

Tickets are on sale at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or stopping by the Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. on weekdays and 12-4 on Saturdays. Regular tickets are available for $29 for adults, $26 for seniors and $18 for students. Premium tickets - the first 12 rows of the orchestra center section - are available $36, $33 and $25, respectively. A $2 processing fee will be applied to each ticket. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for discounted rates. Parents are advised of adult language and content in this production.

Gina Lupi, who directed the critically acclaimed productions of "Man of La Mancha" and "Gypsy" at Algonquin Arts Theatre, returns to direct. The book is by Terrence McNally with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. "The Full Monty" is based on the Motion Picture Released by Fox Searchlight Pictures written by Simon Beaufoy, produced by Uberto Pasolini, and directed by Peter Cattaneo.

Originally an independent British film, "The Full Monty," was "the little movie that could" at the 1998 Academy Awards. It received nominations for Best Picture, director and screenplay. The small tale of a group of down and out guys was an international phenomenon, becoming, at that time, the most successful film in British history.

While the movie, set in the industrial town of Sheffield, had a decidedly English feel, the creators of the stage musical decided to change the locale to Buffalo which shares many of the same working class characteristics as Sheffield.

After its out-of-town tryout at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, "The Full Monty" opened on Broadway on October 26, 2000, at the Eugene O'Neill Theater. It received 10 Tony Award nominations and played 770 performances on Broadway. Two years later, it opened in London's West End, winning the London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical.

"The Full Monty" opens the 2013-14 Algonquin Arts Theatre Broadway Series, which returns by popular demand and will present five big, Broadway style productions during the season. Following the opening production, Carter Calvert ("Always Patsy Cline") returns in November to star as Eva Peron in Evita. Walnut Street Theatre's "Driving Miss Daisy," the Algonquin production of "My Fair Lady" and "Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show" round out the series.

Discounts are available when The Full Monty and Evita are purchased as part of a two-show package. Visit algonquinarts.org/deal or call the box office for more information.
