MANASQUAN, NJ The birds are flying north and Frog and Toad will be coming out of hibernation for six performances of "A Year With Frog and Toad" beginning on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Algonquin Arts Theatre.

Based on the award-winning books by Arnold Lobel, "A Year With Frog and Toad" is a song-filled year in the life of the two charming woodland characters produced by Shore Repertory Theatre Company (SRT) and supported by Barnabas Health, The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center.

The groundbreaking musical brought professional children's theatre to Broadway for the first time when it opened at the Cort Theatre in 2003. It was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical that season. Variety raved that "A Year with Frog and Toad" "delights young eyes and minds."

Performances are Fridays, March 16 & 23 at 7 p.m., Saturdays, March 17 & 24 at 1 p.m., and Sundays, March 18 & 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at algonquinarts.org or by calling 732-528-9211. Adult tickets cost $27, seniors cost $25 and students & children are $18. Groups of 10 or more qualify for $20 adult/senior tickets and $15 student tickets.

The play follows two best friends, Frog and Toad, as they awaken from hibernation and embark on adventures together: planting a garden, flying kites, sledding down a hill and swimming in a pond.

Joseph Ficarra of Point Pleasant and Sam Rosalsky of Berkeley Heights head up the cast as a perky Frog and a worrywart Toad, respectively. Both actors return to the Algonquin stage after appearing in Shore Repertory's critically acclaimed production of "Man of La Mancha" last September. In that production, Rosalsky was praised as a "delightful character who adds levity and laughter" for his role as Sancho, while Ficarra stared in the roles of the Duke, Carrasco and the Knight of the Mirrors.

Brian Maguire of Toms River, Elizabeth Rzasa of Lawrenceville and Kimberly Susskind of Galloway all debut for SRT as the assorted colorful hopping, crawling and flying companions that Frog and Toad also call friends.

"A Year with Frog and Toad" is directed by Jan Topoleski of Brick, who was seen as Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha." Music direction is by Anthony Di Dia who also returns from the "Man of La Mancha," and choreography is by Victoria Lee. Both Di Dia and Lee reside in Toms River.

Lobel's books have won both the Caldecott and Newbery Awards. The musical version was commissioned by his daughter, Adrianne Lobel, with musical book and lyrics by Willie Reale and music by Robert Reale.

Algonquin Arts Theatre was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organization that uses the arts to provide cultural enrichment and educational enhancement of the highest quality for Central New Jersey residents.
