MANASQUAN, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2012) – The classic American musical "Gypsy" opens the 2012-13 Algonquin Arts Theatre season on Oct. 12 with a two weekend run.
From the first trumpet blast of its legendary "Overture" to the last white-hot spotlight, "Gypsy" is considered by many critics to be "the best musical ever." This kaleidoscope of life in the theatre during the 1920s tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer turned stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering, overbearing mother, Rose, as Rose battles stage directors, theatre owners and hotel managers in her efforts to push her two daughters toward stardom as vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born.
Brielle’s Lynne Truex features in the role of a lifetime as Rose, and Manasquan’s Mark Megill joins the cast as Herbie. Lauren Tuzzo of Tinton Falls stars as Louise/Gypsy.
Jule Styne's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics include "Let Me Entertain You," "Some People," "You'll Never Get Away from Me," "If Momma Was Married," "All I Need Is the Girl," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "You Gotta Get A Gimmick" and "Together Wherever We Go". Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous burlesque dancer, the musical’s book is written by Arthur Laurents who rounds out the all-star creative team.
"Gypsy" takes the Algonquin Arts Theatre stage for two weekends starting on Friday, October 12 and closing on Sunday, October 19. Tickets are on sale at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or stopping by the Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. on weekdays and 12-4 on Saturdays. Regular tickets are available for $28 for adults, $26 for seniors and $18 for students. Premium tickets – the first 10 rows of the orchestra center section – are available $33, $31 and $23, respectively. A $2 processing fee will be applied to each ticket. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for discounted rates.
"Gypsy" is directed by Gina Lupi who directed Shore Repertory’s critical acclaimed, award winning production of "Man of La Mancha" last fall. It is produced by Jan Topoleski of Brick and features musical direction by Anthony DiDia and choreography by Victoria Lee both of Toms River.
Hosts of crowd favorites return to the Algonquin stage in this production, including Luke Pearlberg of Brielle and Jake Walsh of Wall (both Oliver in "Oliver!") after starring in this summer’s blockbuster. Algonquin patrons will also remember Walsh as Winthrop Paroo in last season’s production of "The Music Man."
"Gypsy" opens the 2012-13 Algonquin Arts Theatre Broadway Series, which returns by popular demand and will present five big, Broadway style musicals during the season. In December, Shore Repertory Theatre Company returns to present "Scrooge! The Musical" and in January Emmy-Award winner Sally Struthers stars alongside Broadway's Carter Calvert in "Always Patsy Cline." Two additional spring titles will be announced early next year.
Discounts are available to the Broadway Series by purchasing a subscription of two or more titles. Visit algonquinarts.org/subscriptions or call the box office for more information.
Algonquin Arts Theatre was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organization to provide cultural enrichment and educational enhancement of the highest quality for Central New Jersey residents.
